As the weather warms up for the summer season, many families are ready to explore and plan trips. In my opinion, the summer is hands down the best time to live in Connecticut, so instead of jetting off, why not keep your next adventure local?
Day trips are a great way to spend quality time as a family before the hustle of the school year kicks back in. Below are some of my favorite day trips and ideas from fellow Fairfield County Mom contributors. Happy planning!
1. New York City
Well, this is my favorite place in the world, so I love to take family day trips here! We hop on the train, and within 90 minutes, we arrive in Grand Central. There is so much to do; some of our favorites in recent years have been visiting the Museum of Ice Cream, seeing Broadway shows, walking through the Central Park Zoo, and touring the American Museum of Natural History.
2. Mystic Aquarium
Fun for all ages, this aquarium offers a lot to explore. There are whales, sea lions, seals, and penguins. This aquarium is also steeped in endangered species conservation, which is an added bonus for supporting it. While in Mystic, a stop by Olde Mistick Village is always fun, too. This open-air shopping area has unique shops and restaurants just a half mile from the aquarium.
3. Connecticut Science Center
Located in Hartford, the museum’s mission is to open the doors of science to all visitors. It boasts various ways to engage with and see STEM in action. The museum’s exhibits also make it a good place for families with kids of various ages. They even have a teen program. This one is definitely on my list for a visit.
4. Nature’s Art Village/The Dinosaur Place
Geared toward younger children, this 60-acre outdoor adventure park includes over fifty life-sized dinosaurs you can view while walking nature trails. No advance tickets or reservations are required. Other attractions include an outdoor maze, playground, and splash pad. Check the website for hours for the above-listed activities.
5. Connecticut Air and Space Center
For kids who are fascinated by aviation, this is the spot! It is located in Stratford and includes various aircraft, helicopters, and vehicles detailed and listed on its website.
6. Newport, RI
While this seaside town makes for a great weekend getaway, it’s also very doable as a day trip from Fairfield County. Besides the beaches, we enjoy strolling through town and popping into the shops and seafood restaurants. The Cliff Walk is also a favorite for many, where you will pass the famous mansions from the Gilded Age and breathtaking ocean views.
7. New York Botanical Garden
If you want to be transported without going too far, this is a great option, and it allows for outdoor fun for the whole family. Currently, there is a Wonderland-themed exhibition that brings Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to life. As you leave, there are many excellent restaurants nearby on Arthur Avenue where you can enjoy lunch or dinner together.
8. Local Amusement Parks
We always have a blast at Quassy Amusement and Water Park. This park is very manageable for a day of fun. We usually start at the dry rides and then head to the waterpark in the afternoon. My kids have celebrated birthdays and attended field trips here. They always have fun. An added bonus is that you can bring in your own food and drinks for those picky eaters. For families with older kids (about eight and up), Lake Compounce in Bristol offers larger rollercoasters and scarier rides.
