We all think of winter in New England as grey, dark, and miserable. Winter in Fairfield County can be magical, even when the days are cold and short.
We’ve got you covered if you’re looking for ways to keep your family entertained and active this season! This ultimate winter bucket list is filled with fun indoor and outdoor activities the whole family will love.
1. Go Ice Skating
Nothing says winter fun like ice skating! Fairfield County is home to several great rinks—both Darien Ice House and the Winter Garden Ice Arena in Ridgefield for public skating sessions. You can also visit the Westport PAL Rink at Longshore for outdoor skating surrounded by picturesque views.
2. Explore a Winter Hike
Bundle up and head to Devil’s Den in Weston or Lake Mohegan in Fairfield for a cozy winter hike. With fewer crowds and potentially snowy trails, it’s a great way to enjoy nature and burn off some energy. (We’ve also got a great guide for family-friendly hikes here.) Don’t forget your thermos of hot cocoa for post-hike warming up. Or check out one of these cozy cafes to pick one up!
3. Visit a Local Library
Beat the chill by exploring cozy spaces at your local library. Almost all Fairfield County libraries offer storytime, craft activities, and indoor play areas. The bonus is that there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book on a cold day.
4. Hit the Sledding Hills
Grab your sleds and head to Fairfield County’s favorite sledding spots. We’ve got the complete guide here!
5. Visit a Farmers’ Market
Did you know some farmers’ markets stay open during the winter? Check out the Westport Farmers’ Indoor Market or the Black Rock Farmers’ Market in Bridgeport for fresh, local goods and a fun outing.
6. Bake Together
Nothing warms up a cold day like baking with your family. Try a new recipe for cookies, muffins, or even homemade bread. Let the kids help with the measuring, mixing, and, of course, taste-testing.
