We are in full-fledged summer mode over here! This means we hear, “Can we please do something?” or “I am hungry,” every hour on the hour in our house. Last week (aka the week it rained every day), we decided to respond to the chorus of boredom cries with, “LET’s make some SIMPLE SLIME!” Bonus, “Making Slime” was on our Summer Bucket List. I have to say while we have purchased many an oozy gooey substance, we have never actually made homemade simple slime. It turns out it was way easier than I thought, and cleanup was not nearly as bad as I anticipated.Simple Slime from Nichole B. Miller on Vimeo.
Materials
- Glass bowl
- Glue (we used Elmer’s school glue in the 4oz bottle)
- Warm water
- Spoons
- Food coloring (we used liquid food coloring)
- Borax (I bought ours at Target in the laundry soap aisle)
Directions
- Have your child squeeze the bottle of glue into a glass bowl.
- Mix in 4 ounces of warm water. I just filled up the empty glue bottle with warm water to get equal parts glue and water.
- Stir until smooth.
- Add food coloring. A little goes a long way.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of Borax into 1/2 cup of water and slowly add the solution to the glue mixture.
- Stir in the Borax solution until the slime starts to come together. (You might not need all of the Borax solution.)
- Once your slime has the desired consistency … knead the slime until it finally holds together.
- When your child is finished with the simple slime, store it in a sealable container or Ziploc bag for about two weeks.
Variations and Tips
- You can make “fluffy” slime by adding 2 to 3 cups of shaving cream before adding the borax.
- Don’t have borax, and your vision is not 20/20 — contact solution works great as the activator in place of the borax. Just make sure your contact solution has boric acid listed as an active ingredient.
- You could add glitter… just saying. I am not that brave. But you could.
- Next time, we will add a drop or two of essential oils to make the slime scented.
- It is truly NOT that messy and does not get stuck under your fingernails like play-doh.
