It’s Darty Season

What is darty you ask? Let me inform you of some college lingo! Darty is a combination of the words day and party. It’s a day party. You gather during the day and are at home in pjs and in bed at 9 p.m. Those college kids are so smart.

Darties work for moms, too! By calling a party a darty instead, you are letting everyone know ahead of time that the party ends early. No worrying about those folks who never leave your barbecue. It’s darty season and here is why you should host one.

No Fuss

We talk a lot about kid’s parties, let’s talk more about just-because parties. As I get closer to age 50, I find myself entertaining less. I don’t want the stress that comes with party planning and execution. My anxiety would always be through the roof when I party planned. I overthought and expected perfection. I’m done with all that. I like the idea of a darty because I see it as less of a fuss. It’s low-key. It’s an afternoon. It’s whatever you want it to be.

It’s Outside

A darty is outside! Remember, it’s no fuss, so if it’s raining, it’s canceled. I much prefer outside gatherings because I get a little crazy with cleaning before company comes, which leads to hating hosting. Out on the deck is the perfect spot for a darty. I’m lucky enough to have a pool for a summer darty. A pool is a bonus; any outdoor space works. If you are concerned about having enough chairs, tell your guests to bring a camp chair.

Simple Dining

Food and drinks for a darty are simple. Apps, apps, and more apps. Tell people to bring their favorite app or drink. Juice for the kids and a pitcher of lemon water. Done. Grab a pack of paper plates, napkins, and plastic utensils. Simple cleanup for a darty!

Decor

I was going to suggest some darty themes, like a tea darty, but no. No fuss means no theme! Just let it be. Let it be a simple party without worrying about a theme to follow. Throw down a tablecloth (if you want; it’s unnecessary) and put some fresh flowers in a mason jar. The decor is easy for a minimalist party.

The Kids

Keeping the kids busy will likely be the part of a darty that requires some prep. I am a big fan of letting the kids figure out what to do themselves. It’s good old-fashioned yard fun, but let’s be realistic. Depending on the age of the kids, involve them in coming up with activities ahead of time. I always keep yard toys, games, and sidewalk chalk in my garage; a darty is a great time to pull them out. Bubbles work wonders; a new large bouncy ball is fun, or even crayons and paper can keep them busy.

Darty season is upon us. Are you inspired to host one?
