Dear Daughter {Before You Become A Big Sister}

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a daughter as a female offspring, but that definition does not properly give the term ‘daughter’ justice. If they had asked me, I would have defined my daughter as my heart, sunshine, and reason for being. You are all that to me and more.

From the moment we locked eyes in the hospital, my love for you has grown exponentially daily. I have loved the two years you have been my only child and daughter.

Your baby sister will arrive in about two months, and our lives will change. Our nights will not be as peaceful, but our hearts will grow with a whole lot of love.

You have been so excited to meet your baby sister and are already sharing your stickers and favorite buddies with her through my belly, picking out presents for her, and helping mommy get her room ready.

You have the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met and will be a great big sister. I can’t wait to see the love between you. However, you must be patient when your baby sister arrives and understand that you must share Mommy’s attention with her. Make no mistake; my love for you will continue growing.

I don’t know how, but I think you sense what is about to come. About two months ago, you started a tradition for us of singing and rocking before bedtime. Even though I give you the choice of rocking with mommy or daddy every night, you always choose mommy. We snuggle, rock, and sing a few of your favorite songs while I try to ingrain these nights into my memory to lock them away so that I can keep them forever.

I am soaking up all the alone time we are getting right now, and these nights have been unexpected treasures. Thank you for needing me, even though one of your favorite things to say these days is, “I’m a big girl.”

You will always be my first, and that love is indescribable. You taught me about newborns, infants, and now toddlers. I can’t possibly list all of our firsts together and capture all we still have left, but we are in this adventure together.

I will never stop learning from you and never forget that you were my first.

Please remember that I might not be able to pick you up right away because your baby sister needs to be fed or when your baby sister is crying, and you want me to play stickers with you. Being a big sister is a big job, but I know you are more than up for it. Remember, we’re on this adventure together.

Love, Mommy

Aarika lives in Trumbull with her husband, two daughters (2013 and 2015), and son (2020). Originally from Ulster County, NY, she fell in love with her husband at a UConn football game when she told him he had nice biceps and the rest is history. Outside of work and motherhood, she enjoys eating good food, sharing a drink with friends, summer days spent at Pinewood Lake or on vacation in Cape Cod, and mindlessly streaming too many shows with her husband. Her favorite time of day is early morning before her kids wake up with a hot cup of coffee and a good book.
