Girls playing in a splash pad.Between camps, beach passes, ice cream stops, and “I’m bored” snack runs, summer with kids can get expensive fast. So I rounded up some of the best FREE (or super affordable) summer activities, programs, museum perks, and restaurant deals for Fairfield County families! Bookmark this one for when you need it most.

FREE Kids Workshops at The Home Depot

This is one of my favorite free kid activities. The first Saturday of every month, kids can build a FREE project at Home Depot stores between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Think mini games, toolboxes, birdhouses, sports projects, and more. Kids also get:

  • A little apron
  • Achievement pin
  • Certificate

This is perfect for ages 4–12 and honestly such a good rainy-day or heat-wave activity.

FREE or Inexpensive Kids Workshops at Lowes

Lowes’ Kids Club hosts regular free or inexpensive workshops (usually $15) on Saturdays. Think mini wooden toy box, toy train, and a new collab with Mr. Beast Swarm with workshops on building a Ferris wheel and mini jet!

Connecticut State Parks

Thanks to Passport to Parks, all of Connecticut’s state parks, beaches, forests, trails, waterways, and historic sites are free for CT residents with a Connecticut license plate

The Peabody Museum in New Haven

Admission to the Peabody Museum is FREE! No need to buy tickets and no time restrictions. Make a day out of it and enjoy all that New Haven has to offer, including (arguably) the best pizza in CT!

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk

Not free daily, but:

  • Check your local library for FREE museum/aquarium passes
  • They occasionally participate in statewide free admission programs
  • Great for rainy days and toddlers through tweens
  • Discounted tickets for EBT/Snap cardholders

Touch tanks + seals = guaranteed kid win.

Mystic Aquarium

Again — not usually free, but:

  • Many CT libraries offer discounted or free passes
  • Keep an eye out for special free admission days
  • Families may qualify for reduced admission through Museums for All, Military, First Responder, EBT/SNAP, or certain employers. Check to see if your family qualifies!

Fairfield Museum & History Center

This is a great low-key local outing, and they often host family-friendly events, exhibits, and summer programming, such as Summer Saturdays, where you can try hands-on activities in the Museum Commons. Some highlights include Story Time, Drop-in Drawings where you can learn from a local artist, and Sing Me a Story.

Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum

Such a hidden gem in Norwalk — gorgeous architecture, and they sometimes offer free family/community events throughout the year. While you’re there, pop over to Devon’s Place, a local park just recently revamped with accessible play areas and a splash pad! Don’t forget Stepping Stones, one of our favorite children’s museums, where you can snag a free pass through most local libraries.

Check Your Library for FREE Passes

This is the MOST underrated mom hack. Many Fairfield County libraries offer:

  • Aquarium passes
  • Museum passes
  • Zoo discounts
  • State park passes
  • Science center discounts

It’s seriously worth checking your local library website before paying full price.

Museums for All

Families receiving SNAP/EBT benefits can receive FREE or reduced admission at thousands of museums nationwide. Some Connecticut museums participate too.

Summer Reading = FREE Stuff

A bunch of stores and restaurants reward kids for reading over the summer:

Definitely sign your kids up early because many programs start in June.

Report Card Freebies & Rewards

YES, some places still reward good grades! Here are a few worth checking:

  • Chuck E. Cheese reward calendars
  • McDonald’s Free Happy Meal
  • Sonic – Free Kids Meals
  • Krispy Kreme (some locations)
  • Friendly’s / local ice cream shops
  • Barnes & Noble summer reading rewards
  • Showcase Cinemas Bookworm Wednesdays

Programs vary by location, but it’s worth asking!

Cheap Summer Movie Programs

Many theaters offer summer kids’ movies for just a few dollars:

Perfect for rainy days or heat waves.

FREE Nature & Outdoor Fun in Fairfield County

A few always-good freebies:

And honestly? Sometimes Home Depot, Petco, Bass Pro, and IKEA become the summer field trips.

Mom Tip

Before paying full price anywhere:

  1. Check your library website
  2. Look for resident discounts
  3. Search “community day” or “free family day”
  4. Check if your museum membership gives reciprocity elsewhere (huge savings!)

What free (or cheap) summer activities do you know about? If I missed any Fairfield County summer freebies or deals — drop them in the comments, and I’ll add them!
