Summer fruit-picking season is here! There’s nothing better than enjoying the sweet rewards of a day spent fruit picking—and we’re lucky to have several pick-your-own farms right here in Fairfield County. Whether it’s your first trip or a seasonal tradition, a little planning goes a long way in making your visit fun and stress-free (especially with young kids in tow).
Here are some tried-and-true tips from experienced parents.
1. Dress Smart and Pack the Essentials
It gets hot out there—think open fields, so very little shade. Bring hats and sunglasses, and slather on sunscreen. Avoid very light-colored clothes (especially for kids!), and consider closed-toed shoes if possible. Bug spray or bug-repellent bracelets are a must if your little ones are nervous about bees (tea tree oil also works wonders).
2. Bring Wipes
Wipes are lifesavers for sticky fingers, dirty legs, and impromptu snack cleanups. Even if your diaper bag days are behind you, keep a travel pack handy.
3. Carry Cash
Some farms still operate old-school—no cards, no mobile pay. Have cash on hand for entry fees, fruit purchases, or any farm stand treats, such as freshly made baked goods.
4. Check the Farm’s Picking Updates
Before heading out, call the farm directly or check their social media. Fruit availability changes fast, especially after busy weekends or inclement weather.
5. Go Early
Beat the heat and the crowds. Early morning visits (when offered) tend to be more enjoyable, especially for young children. You’ll likely get the best selection of fruit, too.
6. Have a Plan for the Fruit
Get kids excited by planning to make jam, pie, or smoothies with your fruit haul.
