When I first started on my journey of parenthood, 18 summers felt like a world away. As summer approaches, and I realize I only have six more summers with my oldest child, I am filled with a mix of emotions.
As parents, we’re often told that the days are long, but the years are short. This sentiment truly hits home when we consider the fleeting nature of childhood, especially those 18 summers we get with our kids before they venture out on their own. It’s a period marked by immense growth, change, and a unique opportunity to create lasting memories.
From the early years filled with building sandcastles and splashing in kiddie pools to the teenage summers of driving lessons and late-night talks, each summer holds its own significance. We witness our children evolve, discover their passions, overcome challenges, and shape their identities. These summers aren’t just about vacations; they’re about teaching life lessons, instilling values, and nurturing the bond that will sustain us through the years.
The realization that there are only 18 summers is a poignant reminder to be present and intentional in life. It encourages us to put down our phones, step away from our to-do lists, and fully engage in the simple joys of childhood.
Before we know it, those 18 summers will be a cherished collection of memories —a testament to the love and laughter we shared and a foundation upon which our children will build their futures.
Will there be more summers after 18? Of course, but it is never the same. They have launched beyond childhood and begun to shape their futures. Cherish all the summers you get before they become just a memory.
