I’m Ready to Ditch the Diaper Bag

diaper bagPicture this – it is 2018. I’m meeting a group of friends at the aquarium with my three-year-old and eighteen-month-old twins. I have a huge diaper bag filled with diapers, bottles, snacks, and extra clothes. My bestie breezes in with her children (then 6 and 9) and nothing but a small crossbody bag.

She looked so free without a diaper bag weighing her down. I longed for a day that I could drop the diaper bag and travel like my friend.

My “babies” are now four and have been potty trained for almost two years. My bag no longer needs to house diapers, and I keep extra clothes in the car because, for the most part, spills and accidents are a thing of the past.

I am long overdue to ditch the diaper bag and move on to my next mom bag.

I LOVE my diaper bag. When I was pregnant with my twins, I spent countless hours researching the perfect bag. I decided on a Pottery Barn bag, and it has had a very good run. I’ve often considered replacing it but haven’t been able to walk away from it or find a better solution.

After a spring and summer of outdoor adventures and hiking, I realize that it is no longer right for me even though my bag does have a backpack option.

I like to be prepared, on top of the basics – wallet, keys, snacks, water cups, and wipes, I pack an essentials bag (eye drops, makeup, hairbrush, lotion, hair ties, mirror, first aid supplies like band aids and Neosporin spray), and now the 2020 supplies like hand sanitizer, antibacterial hand wipes, Clorox wipe packet, and masks.

So what is my next bag? I’m still not sure, but what I do know is that when a mom needs help, she turns to other moms for advice.

Here is a list of solutions for ditching the diaper bag and finding the next step in mom bags:

Crossbody

Backpack

Tote

Jamie is a mom to a daughter (2014) and boy/girl twins (2016) and rescue rabbit Gilbert. She was born and raised in Westchester County, NY and together with her husband (married in 2011), made Danbury, CT their hometown. She is fortunate to have found two dream jobs: a licensed Connecticut real estate agent with The Valentini Team at Coldwell Banker Realty and Children’s Programming Assistant at her local library. Both bring her joy because they allow her to help others—guiding families as they find a place to call home and inspiring children to develop a love of learning and reading from an early age. Before anyone in her house is awake, she can be found at Burn Bootcamp or on the Peloton leaderboard, which fuels her long days of work and momming. Morning workouts are as athletic as she gets, although getting her children to all their activities is like an Olympic sport, and her favorite thing is tucking her children in at night and catching up on whatever show she is streaming. As much as she loves staying in, she doesn’t pass up a night out or weekend away with her childhood girlfriends or a date night with her hubby.
