A Wink From the Universe

There are moments in parenting that feel oddly familiar, like life is quietly handing you a second chance to experience something through your child’s eyes. This year gave me one of those moments.

My third-grade daughter entered the contest to represent Lavinia Warren for the 2026 Barnum Festival Royal Family, and our family was shocked and excited when she was named this year’s representative. The process itself was such a wonderful experience for her. She first had to submit a video introducing herself and sharing a special talent. Then came the interview, the kind of experience that asks a child to step out of their comfort zone, speak confidently, and let their personality shine.

What made me most proud wasn’t the outcome but the way my daughter carried herself. It was the way she walked into the room with confidence and kindness, shaking every judge’s hand, smiling warmly, and thanking each of them for their time. Watching her carry herself with such genuine poise and gratitude made me proud long before we ever knew the outcome.

But what makes this feel especially meaningful is the full-circle story behind it.

When I was in third grade, I also interviewed for the role of representing Lavinia Warren. I remember the nerves—the excitement. And then I remember the disappointment when they did not announce my name.

And now, years later, I find myself sitting on the other side of that same experience, watching my own daughter walk into the very opportunity I once dreamed about. Life has a funny way of weaving stories together across generations. Somehow, this felt less like a coincidence and more like a little wink from the universe.

My daughter will spend the summer attending events as part of the 2026 Royal Family. From parades and community celebrations to family festivals and appearances throughout the season, she’ll have the opportunity to represent kindness, confidence, and community spirit while making memories she will likely carry forever.

And honestly, I think that’s what I love most about this tradition. It gives children the chance to feel connected to something bigger than themselves, to their town, their community, and the generations before them.

I’ve also loved learning more about Lavinia Warren herself along the way. Beyond the historical novelty often associated with her name, she was known as a talented performer, teacher, and strong-willed woman who advocated for herself at a time when many women did not have that opportunity. There’s something special about watching young girls today step into a role connected to such a fascinating piece of history.

We can’t wait to cheer our daughter on through this unforgettable summer, and maybe I’ll be soaking it all in a little extra, knowing somewhere inside me, my third-grade self is smiling too.
