I remember the day my nephew was born, as if it happened yesterday. The first baby to join our family. His tiny hands, the little cries, the excitement that surrounded him. Everyone had a story, a prediction, a hope for who he would become. Watching him grow through the years has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
And now, somehow, we are sitting here watching him graduate from high school. It feels impossible that the little boy we once held, carried, and watched grow is now walking across a stage, accepting a diploma, and stepping into the next chapter of his life. The years that seemed so long when we were living them somehow disappeared in the blink of an eye.
That’s the funny thing about watching children grow: you don’t always notice the changes that are happening in the everyday moments. And then one day you look at them and realize they have become someone completely new.
The baby who once depended on everyone for everything has become a young man with his own dreams, opinions, friendships, and goals. The child who filled our lives with firsts is now the first in our family to graduate high school, and it feels so bittersweet.
Graduation may be a celebration of the graduate, but it also serves as a reminder for the rest of us about just how quickly time moves. It reminds us to pay attention to the moments we think will last forever, because they don’t. The birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, sports games, summers, and ordinary days – they come and go quicker than we like to believe. Watching him graduate made me want to bottle up my own children’s childhoods for just a little longer.
