My ten-year-old is an Ulta and Sephora pro. When we walk into either store, she jokingly remarks that she is an “honorary employee” and can show me exactly what aisle the item I’m looking for is in.
When she started down this path last summer, I was more than hesitant to allow her to dabble in makeup. But I weighed the pros and cons with my husband, and we thought it through and felt that there were worse things she could be interested in. The big wake-up call for me was when I quickly realized that she actually isn’t really into makeup, but more the skincare aspect of it all.
Dealing with a 10-year-old who likes brands like Sol de Janeiro, Drunk Elephant, and Glow Recipe can get very expensive very quickly. This has proven to be a wonderful exercise in teaching her about her wants and needs, as well as spending her own allowance and the worth of a dollar. She is proving to be savvy with selections of travel sizes and thinking through whether or not she needs that third moisturizer for a skincare smoothie.
She has also taken great interest in whatever my routine may or may not have been and how we could improve it. She asked me about my skincare goals, whether I was striving to improve my elasticity, moisturize, and other things over my head. She has put me on a genuine skincare regimen for both morning and night which I am happy to report back does have my skin looking and feeling more fresh and vibrant!
Aside from the obvious fun and “girly” time this shared interest in skincare has brought to help us have a new regular bonding time, my little girl has given me a gift I don’t even think she was planning on. I am spending time taking care of myself in small ways.
Whether it’s five minutes at night taking care of my body, because yes, our faces are part of our bodies, too, or treating myself to a new scent that makes me feel spruced up in the perfume aisle, I find myself taking more pride in myself and my appearance, and what mom couldn’t use some extra time to feel good about herself?!
