Skincare After Age 40

0

A woman squirting skincare products in her hand. After my youngest was born, I revamped my skincare and makeup routine. Fast-forward, and over nine years have passed! I discovered a solid routine and tweaked some of the tips I had received, but now, at over 40, my old ways of caring for my skin and applying makeup need some updates.

This time, I turned to my beautiful friends and fellow contributors to pull together a collection of what they love. There’s so much to share that I’ve divided it into two parts. The first focused on skincare.

These are the top tips I’ve received and some that I’ve implemented in my quest to keep my face looking and feeling good for this season of life.

This one might be obvious, and it’s certainly simple to do, but it’s sometimes overlooked: sleep. On average, anyone over 40 should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

Sleep helps with skin cell regeneration, reduces inflammation, and promotes hydration.

That brings up the next tiphydrating. Generally, we should aim for half our body weight in ounces of water. So, if you weigh 130 lbs, you would aim for 65 ounces of water per day. Water alone won’t keep your skin looking great, but it is a key piece of the puzzle!

That brings me to my next tip: Develop a skincare routine that you can stick to in the morning and evening. Your routine should include cleansing, toning, treating, and moisturizing. Focus on the areas that you care most about.

Fine lines and those pesky “11s” are the two lines that used to be visible only when you were squinting but have now decided to make their presence known right between your eyes. For these, use F59, also known as “Botox in a bottle.” One fellow contributor swears that her Oliveda mix from Olive Tree People has improved the appearance of her skin so much that she typically goes makeup-free. She uses F0, F59, and F64 morning and night.

Lift, tighten, and reduce fine lines with the Redefine regimen from Rodan and Fields. As a subscriber, this gets delivered right to me, and I have the option to add products at a discounted price. Following it has definitely helped balance out my skin and keep it feeling soft, hydrated, and fresh.

Even with my tried and true routine, I am ready to mix it up to see what adding in or changing out a product can do.

Here are some ideas for add-ins if you don’t need a whole routine but want to shake things up.

  • Incorporate a Vitamin C serum in the morning to stimulate collagen production and help even out dark spots in the skin. Ulta has so many to choose from at all price points.
  • Give your skin a Velvet Skin Drink from Korres instead of a thick moisturizer in the mornings. This is light and makes the face smooth and dewy. One of my friends swears by Korres products.
  • A fellow contributor loves Regina Skincare products. She told me about this beef tallow face salve, which fights winter dryness and improves skin elasticity.

I also received many great ideas that won’t break the bank. These are simple, time-tested, and inexpensive ways to care for your skin.

  • Use Ponds Cold Cream and a warm washcloth to wash your face at the end of the day.
  • Apply Vaseline on skin, lips, and neck to soften and moisturize skin.
  • Remove swelling from under the eyes by dabbing on some Preparation H.

What are your tips for keeping skin looking great at all stages of life?
