The Value of Therapy

0

Between pandemic exhaustion, the overwhelmed healthcare system, and unspoken climate variability, we have been through a lot recently. We have lived through some of the most uncertain and traumatic experiences many of us will have faced in our lifetime—one nation – one trauma. At least, it can feel that way, which is why I am here to share about the value of therapy! Especially during these trying times.

When people hear the word “therapy,” most imagine two people in a room, one lying down on a couch and the other scribbling frantically on a notepad. It’s an old association, and I am happy to share that, for the most part, it isn’t like that. For many, therapy looks much different.

Therapy is a valuable and unique experience.

It’s time you can spend with another individual who is solely invested in everything you say. Therapists are trained to support clients, diagnose, and provide growth and healing strategies. It is 50+ minutes with another human being fully invested in your experiences. Someone who is there to validate, challenge, and support you.

As a mental health provider, I have been educated in many types of therapy. Some of which can be used to treat a variety of mental health challenges, and others are for more specific needs. Despite clinical research noting the effectiveness of “one” type of therapy for a specific diagnosis, such as CBT for anxiety, several studies have proven that the effectiveness of therapy is based on the relationship between client and therapist.

It is through this relationship that trust can be established, and true healing can begin.

I’ve been in therapy on and off for many years. I’ve been so lucky to maintain a connection with the person who has consistently provided their expertise and support despite shifting to Telehealth and a move out of state. I feel fortunate to continue seeking the support I need to maintain my mental health as I support and counsel others. If you are on the fence about reaching out to a provider, may this be your encouragement to take the step forward! I’m certain you will not regret it.

Here are some dos and don’ts when reaching out for help.

  • Do “shop” around. Therapists are human too, and not everyone will feel immediate comfort with their therapist, and that’s okay! Spend a few sessions to see if it’s just the “new client” jitters and if there is still something missing, move on. We won’t be offended and can even offer some trusted referrals!
  • Don’t wait until you’re in crisis mode! If you’ve started noticing a shift in your moods or are struggling with activities of daily living, it’s time to seek support. Don’t wait until you’re hanging on by a thread to reach out! You are deserving of support and care.
  • Do stay committed. Therapy is a process, and depending on your history, it can be a LONG one. It is finding someone who is comfortable going at your pace and who is willing to challenge you. It can make all the difference!
  • Finally, DON’T be afraid to ask questions or speak up. If something isn’t working for you, let us know! If you’re confused about something we have said, let us know. We are here for you and want you to become the best version of yourself!
