I can’t believe we are getting ready to say goodbye to summer. In June, I wrote about taking a different approach this summer. I ignored the planner in me and committed to, well, not all that much.
Looking back, all I can think is, WOW, this was a GREAT summer!
While my husband and I were busy working from home, my kids had a lot of downtime. Eventually, this led them to occasionally hang out with each other. They attempted to master pickleball, played basketball in the driveway, rode bikes together, played catch, dusted off the trampoline, and watched a few movies together. Did they bicker for sure, but did they have fun together…I think so!
My kids were around when family visited, and also got to go out with friends often. Invites to a local lake or friends’ pools were almost always accepted. My thirteen-year-old used her babysitting certification as a mother’s helper for our family friends. She loved having extra money to spend. My younger daughter learned to make pasta from scratch and has continued experimenting with making things in the kitchen.
Our monthly trips helped give us something to look forward to and break up the summer. The change of scenery was welcome.
And let’s not forget about the fantastic coverage of the summer Olympics. That enhanced our time at home together. Turning on a completely unknown sporting event and getting sucked into watching was a lot of fun.
As my kids head back to a new school year and we face the craziness that comes with that and busy work schedules, I know I’ll look back at this summer as one of the best. I’m pretty confident my kids will, too. Goodbye summer.
I hope you had the same experience and can think, WOW, this was a GREAT summer. Now, bring on the fall!
