Grateful in Spite of the Noise

A mom doing her daughter's hair. The hustle and bustle of the morning routine is in full swing. My girls are running in circles (literally) around me as I make their breakfast and pack their lunches.

My mind feels noisy and crowded. Too many thoughts, so many plans, and not enough time to pay attention to it all, let alone get it all done.

They set their spots at the table, and we chat about the day ahead. They get dressed, I do their hair, and clean up to reset for the workday. Brush teeth, hand out vitamins, grab backpacks, and out the door we go.

In the car, they have so much to say. Sometimes it’s commentary about passing cars or the weather. Other times it’s facts about cats, or questions too complex for me to even consider before 8 a.m. Mostly, it’s bickering and sister fights that end in screaming or tears.

At drop-off, there’s a smooch (as we call it), a hug, and an “I love you.” A deep breath, and I’m back in the car heading home, back to where we began. Only in the silence of that drive do I get a moment to reflect. To quiet the chaos in my mind. To recognize just how lucky I am to have these girls.

Even in the noise, even in the rush, there is so much to be grateful for.

It’s important to hold these simple moments in memory. A small reminder of how grateful we can be for the families we have, and the little people we’re sending into the world each day.

Even in spite of all the noise.
