Recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month

0

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It began in 1985 due to the efforts of former First Lady Betty FordShe created it to raise awareness about breast cancer, share her journey with the disease, and became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. As the wife of an oncologist, with his guidance, I wanted to discuss ways to honor and recognize this special month.

You

Let’s start with you and your breast health. It’s important to educate yourself on how to be proactive in your own breast care. We all know mammograms are important to start once you turn 40. They aren’t that bad! Yearly mammograms and breast exams from your gynecologist or primary care doctor are important.

Early detection saves lives. My husband says self-breast exams are not enough on their own; it’s these other early detection methods that make the difference. The doctor says you know your body best. If you feel any changes in your breasts, it’s better to get them checked.

Family history can play a role in breast cancer, but my husband says a majority of breast cancers are not genetic. Follow your doctor’s advice for what is best for you.

Helping Others

Check in on friends or family who are going through this journey. The road is bumpy, and cancer patients need a village. Many towns have established groups and put programs in place. Your local health department can help steer you in the right direction. You can also call 211 for information. These local groups are wonderful resources for you to learn more, care for others, and support cancer patients.

Many organizations have events during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Join in! The Norma Pfriem Breast Center has many events going on this month. Check out their event list here.

Here are some Fairfield County groups with events:

Not in Fairfield County, but another organization close by is Seymour Pink. Nationally, the Susan G Komen organization is a wonderful resource. Many programs run fundraisers throughout the year. Moms know October is a busy month! Helping at other times is always welcome too.
