Pressing Pause, and Then Unpressing It

"Pause and reset" displayed on a phone screen. It has been about eight years now that I have been doing this “mom” thing. In some ways, it feels like two years; in other ways, it feels like twenty.

There are no contradictions that could describe the oxymoron that motherhood is. It’s exhausting and exhilarating, fulfilling and depleting, hurrying up and waiting, fun and, at times, dreadful. Yet, there’s no better job.

Four years into my contributor journey with Fairfield County Mom, I started a third (and subsequently fourth) graduate degree program. I know what you’re thinking. And yes, I am nuts. With an already busy schedule, I knew I would have to decide to pause on something in my life. Being a contributor for FCM brought me so many new opportunities and friendships, yet it was just the one extra thing tipping the scale.

So I pressed pause.

I spent the last two years finishing up my fourth Master’s degree, changing jobs, and coaching my kids sports, all while doing the tedious household tasks. Two years have gone by in a flash, but the lingering thought that was always in the back of my head was, “I can’t wait to get my creative juices flowing and get back to the FCM team.” The time has come!

This second round of writing will hopefully share a new, refreshed perspective. I am no longer a mom of toddlers but now a mom of two intelligent, opinionated, busy, funny, and sassy girls. Our journey to this point has been nothing short of chaotic. The baby and toddler years feel like a blur, so my husband and I are determined to make these years last longer.

If your plate feels too full.
If you’re at your tipping point.
If you need some room to breathe.
If you’re so busy, you are becoming forgetful.
If you don’t have any time for self-care.
Press pause. It’s okay.

I promise one day, you will get to hit the unpause button, this time with a re-focused, refreshed perspective.
