Last day on the beach, and the air has turned cool
We all know what that means; it’s time to go back to school
New shoes, new backpacks, new pencils, so yellow
Not that summer felt calm exactly, but it was definitely more mellow
A whole new year and new grades to begin
Will they like their teachers, will they have fun, will they fit in?
Or will they stand out when the time is right and take the lead?
They are nervous but eager, ready and poised to succeed
Saying hello to old friends and perhaps some new
Without them home all day, what shall I do?
Wink, wink, I’ve got plenty of to-dos on my plate
And truth be told, I can hardly wait!
It’s time, for me and for them, a little space will be nice
But miss them I will, of course, you don’t have to ask me twice
The time has come again for them to spread their wings and fly away
For now, I am grateful it is just day by day
It will be here before I know it that they are all grown
And then it will be time for them to leave all on their own
So for now, I will celebrate, wish them well, and prepare a snack
To greet my 5th grader and 3rd grader when they hop off the bus and come back
