Do you ever wish that you could celebrate Halloween all year long? Just me? As Fairfield County Mom resident spooky mom, I am loving the recent trend of celebrating a “Summerween.” Here are some ways to bring the Halloween spirit to the summer months.
1. Hit up a drive-in to see a spooky summer movie.
While it might be fun to stay at home and watch a scary movie, there’s nothing more nostalgic than a drive-in theatre. Connecticut has a few of these still in operation, including the Southington Drive-In, which will feature the summer horror classic “Jaws” later this summer.
Or you could stay in, get the backyard projector going, and put on a classic like “I Know What You Did Last Summer” or “Friday the 13th.” There are so many movies that fit this theme. Some of my personal favorites, including the previously mentioned ones, are Midsommar (2019), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and The Lost Boys (1987).
2. Decorate your house for Summerween.
Home decor shops like HomeGoods have been carrying Summerween-themed pillows, hand towels, and other awesome home decor items. Get into the spirit by carving watermelon jack-o-lanterns or putting sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt on your life-sized skeleton.
If you can’t find decorations locally, check out Amazon for pillows, cute figurines, or a funny shirt.
3. Throw a Summerween bash!
Like we need another idea for a summertime party, start with some balloons, decorations, and this amazing blow-up cooler. Put that carved watermelon jack-o-lantern to use as a centerpiece for a fruit salad or charcuterie. You can also cut jack-o-lantern faces into a slice of cheese for a spooky burger or wrap a hot dog in crescent roll dough for “mummy” dogs.
For the drinks, freeze eyeballs in your ice cube tray for a festive cocktail. You can’t forget dessert with classic dirt cups with gummy worms, which are a hit with all ages and stay on theme for Summerween and beyond.
