My son and daughter are turning 8 and 9 in just a few weeks, and this year, we’ve decided to give them something really special—a puppy!
Of course, we’ll be getting them a few other gifts, and their large extended family will undoubtedly shower them with even more, but the puppy is the star of the show. We’re adopting him from a rescue shelter in Kentucky. He is a purebred mini poodle that no one seemed to want. His name was Aladdin, but my kids have renamed him “Noodle the Poodle.”
The excitement in our house is contagious as we count down the days until his arrival—well, everyone except my husband, who is convinced that after the initial excitement wears off, he’ll do most of the work. And he might be right. Still, as someone who grew up only being allowed goldfish as pets, I can’t imagine the excitement of having a puppy ever fading. Maybe I’m overly optimistic, but I believe this will be a long-lasting joy for all of us.
A big part of why we’re getting the puppy is to teach our kids responsibility.
I’m hoping they’ll understand that Noodle will need daily walks, feeding, and cleaning up after him (because, let’s be honest, it’s not all going to be me!). Caring for a pet offers important life lessons—patience, empathy, and the satisfaction of seeing their efforts make a real difference in the puppy’s well-being.
I’m also hoping Noodle can smooth out some of the sibling dynamics. With three kids, there’s always that moment when someone feels left out, or like they’re not having as much fun as the others. Now, when someone’s feeling down or sidelined, I can say, “Go play with the dog!” Having Noodle around might bring more balance and unity into the mix.
On a more personal note, I’m excited about having a cuddly companion for myself. The kids have started saying they’re too old to cuddle with me, but I’m pretty sure Noodle will never refuse a snuggle after a long day. There’s something about a dog’s loyalty and unconditional affection that I’ve been looking forward to.
As we prepare for Noodle’s arrival, I know there will be some bumps along the way—late-night potty breaks, chewed shoes, and messes we didn’t anticipate. But I also know this little puppy will bring joy and love to our home.
Watching my kids take on new responsibilities and form a special bond with Noodle will be an experience worth every bit of the chaos, even more than we already have.
This is the start of a new chapter for our family, one that will be filled with wagging tails, playful energy, and countless moments of laughter. We’re ready for whatever comes next. Welcome to the family, Noodle the Poodle!
