Most of us know the symptoms of many of today’s common illnesses. Flu, COVID, a cold, or allergies — we’re often aware of the signs that alert us to take action to manage things so we can feel well again! But, when it comes to our mental health, I’ve found it’s far too common for individuals to struggle to recognize the signs and symptoms of a mental health crisis.
These symptoms may need immediate attention from a professional. Below, I have listed some of the most notable symptoms people experience when experiencing a mental health challenge, which would constitute seeking support.
- Feelings of helplessness/hopelessness
- Inability to sleep or sleeping too much
- Increased irritability
- Self-isolation/withdrawal
- Struggling to perform daily tasks (hygiene, eating, socializing)
- Increase in negative self-talk
- Difficulty sustaining attention/dissociation
- Increase in anxiety, feeling on edge
Reaching out to a professional when we’re not feeling our best can be intimidating. But, the value in receiving support through a mental health crisis is infinite. If you wouldn’t struggle through a common physical illness without utilizing a holistic or traditional medical approach, why push it with your mental health? Finding the right therapist, psychiatrist, and/or group support is key to minimizing your symptoms and getting back on track in your daily life.
