I stand on the shore of the lake after a nice, long walk with my dog. I watch as the sunlight bounces off the clear water as it begins to set. There is a slight breeze as the water ripples and moves with the current. Two geese take flight, leaving the lake behind as they seem to soar almost into the sunset. I inhale deeply and slowly, experiencing a strong sense of calm and connection.
What is it about nature that awakens something inside of us?
Fresh air is always beneficial. I always feel a sense of renewal when I get outside and let the sunshine on my face and the air in my lungs. There is something sacred about being near a body of water, about wildlife waking up after a long winter, about the sun setting again in another magnificent display of dramatic colors.
We were recently away for spring break and lucky enough to spend a week on the beach.
The ocean holds its own healing power, unlike anything else.
The lapping of the water, the crashing of the waves, the way the water continues to retreat time and time again, but never stops returning. The way it seems to extend beyond what our eyes can see, exceeding a distance our minds cannot even grasp.
The way it contains its own world full of wonder, mystery, and living beings. Just being near it fills the soul.
In this world, especially at this point in time, we are perpetually connected. We are all just a click, tap, or app away from everyone and everything. It is a time of electronic brilliance, of artificial intelligence, and of great convenience and availability. But at what cost?
Outside, in nature, on the water, possibly in a place where you cannot even get a signal, is where true peace and connection can begin—connection to yourself and to the living, breathing natural world that seems never to disappoint.
A place where there is nothing artificial about the life around you: a place where you can slow your breath, wonder at the beauty around you, and tap into something greater than yourself.
So, whether you’ve been staring at a screen all day or feeling overextended by your to-do list, or when your heart needs a little extra healing, do not underestimate the beauty and availability of nature. Never forget about the magic that is right outside your door or window.
In this crazy world, it is a wonderful reminder that sometimes the simplest things can be the most healing and transformative. And the best part is that it is available to all of us.
